| Most people know that I sing. But, they also know that I'm not a guy who likes to do a whole lot of riffs and craziness with my voice. I try to sing clearly so that those who are listening can clearly understand what I'm singing about and in turn, give praise to God. I also don't want folks distracted by what I'm doing with my voice and start "praising" me for my vocal skills.
So, a show like Sunday's Best just doesn't do it for me. Am I alone in this one? _________________ It's true that doctrine divides. It's also true that love unifies. | I'm totally with you, Michael. I can't stand all of that, and I don't do it much. Mind you, a run/riff here and there isn't bad...but if it's happening every other word/line? NO. |

Right. I used to love Daryl Coley until the Lord saved me...lol. His runs/riffs are ridiculous. Can't even get through a verse of a song in 2 minutes. _________________ It's true that doctrine divides. It's also true that love unifies. | Oh my goodness, you guys are so right. Now, mind you, I absolutely ADORE music (melodies, harmonies, etc). I respect and appreciate anyone with a beautiful voice. And I think if you are blessed to have a range, then when you sing you should use it. If you can do runs and riffs..then do it. But good greif it shouldn't take over the whole song! People absolutely RUIN a beautiful song when they do that.
Also, in choirs, you know how the director will have the choir repeat this 12 times and hold that note and do this and do that. (My uncle use to do that...actually, still does). It totally messes up the song. When I was younger, I used to like it. But, its like...as I'm singing on the choir, letting the song minister to me as I allow the Lord to use me to minister to the people in the congregation, all of a sudden the director gets our attention and has us repeat stuff...over and over and over. "He's preparing...He's preparing....He's.....He's pre.....He's prepare......He's prepaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaariiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing meeeeeeeeeeeeeee". OH GOOD GRIEF!!!! The song is totally ruined! |

Here's a case in point. The young lady has a beautiful voice, and this is an awesome song. But, all the runs and riffs killed it for me. And I hope Jesus is really patient, because it'll be a while before she "come to thee."

| There was another video she did, "I Surrender All" that was worse, IMO.
"I surrender all. I surrender all. All to Jesus, I surrender. I surrender all (after I'm done riffin')" _________________ It's true that doctrine divides. It's also true that love unifies. | Totally love Daryl Coley. What about the song "Sovereign" Beautiful! I couldn't get down on Sunday's Best either. I'm not a riff/run type of sister but I do like to experiment and "scat" a little maybe a hum or a groan. Its cultural and its preference as well. No, you don't want people to be distracted but I just wish we could all just sing sweet harmonies to the Lord and be so lost in the serenade that no one even cared about who did what riff! |
